The trailer for the new Universal Pictures film “Straight Outta Compton” has arrived and if it’s any indication of the rest of the picture, it could be one of the more memorable music films of our time. Many around in the late 80’s/early 90’s remember this era not just for the music and birth of “gangsta rap,” but for the fact that it brought the realities of life for so many blacks and minorities to the forefront of popular and white culture. Artists like NWA not didn’t just pioneer on the musical front, but also created a cultural awareness and dialogue shift that probably hadn’t been done with music since the anti-war movement in the 60’s. For those reasons I think this film is a must watch and I hope its reach extends beyond the hip hop community when it’s released in August 2015.
Check out this NSFW trailer with an intro by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube:
Synopsis: “In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A, Straight Outta Compton tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.” (movieinsider.com)
